The time cockpit Web API exposes every time tracking entity through REST and OData, plus a query endpoint for TCQL and endpoints for lists, actions and reports. Authentication uses personal access tokens. Power BI and Excel connect directly to the OData endpoint, and the Excel importer loads existing data into time cockpit.

Time Tracking API: REST, OData and Query Endpoints

With the time cockpit Web API you connect your project time tracking to existing systems, manage data efficiently and automate workflows. Thanks to its REST-based architecture, it adapts flexibly to your requirements.

Access Data and Integrate with Existing Systems

With the Web API, you gain comprehensive access to the data in time cockpit, including your own fields and tables from your customizations. The OData endpoint allows CRUD operations (Create, Read, Update, Delete). This lets you use tools like Microsoft Power BI or Excel to create interactive reports, analyze data or export it for further purposes.

For more complex requirements, the query endpoint lets you query any data with the time cockpit Query Language (TCQL). This suits scenarios in which you transfer data to external systems or run detailed analyses.

Three more endpoints complement OData and Query:

  • ExecuteList returns lists that you define in time cockpit and that work like a database view, for example for project-specific reports or controlling evaluations.
  • ExecuteAction runs actions with your own business logic in IronPython that is stored in your time cockpit.
  • Reporting renders your SSRS reports on demand as PDF, Word or Excel files.

Integrations for Connected Time Tracking

Your First OData Request

Every entity in time cockpit is available through the OData endpoint. Authenticate with a personal access token, then filter, select and page the data you need. The example returns ten billable time entries. Power BI and Excel connect to the same endpoint without a single line of code. How development teams book time and create tickets through the API is shown on time tracking for developers.

GET /odata/APP_Timesheet()?$filter=APP_Billable eq true&$top=10 HTTP/1.1
Host: api.timecockpit.com
Authorization: Bearer <personal access token>
Accept: application/json

SSO and User Management by API

Single sign-on with Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory) lets your employees log in with their company accounts, and your security policies apply in time cockpit too. See enterprise time tracking for the details.

In companies with many employees, managing user accounts manually quickly becomes impractical. The User Management API creates, updates and deactivates user accounts automatically. This is especially useful when an HR system holds your employee data: onboarding and offboarding run automatically, access rights stay current, and no inactive accounts remain in the system.

Security and Permissions

Authentication to the Web API uses personal access tokens (PAT), so only authorized users can access sensitive data. The API is fully integrated into time cockpit’s permission system: every request sees only what the token’s user is allowed to see. How time cockpit is operated and protected is described on security and data protection.

Connect AI Assistants: the MCP Server

For Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, Cursor and other AI tools there is the MCP server for AI assistants next to the Web API. It exposes the same business functions through the Model Context Protocol: users sign in with their Microsoft Entra ID account, their time cockpit permissions apply, and the assistant executes changes only after confirmation. System integrations stay with the Web API; questions in natural language go to the MCP server.

Is SQL Your Passion?

If you prefer to query data the traditional SQL way, that’s no problem. In the Business plan, you can ask support@timecockpit.com for read-only database access. This way, you can connect time cockpit to tools like Power BI or Tableau and make the most of your data. After all, it’s your database and your data.

SELECT * FROM APP_Timesheet
INNER JOIN APP_UserDetail
ON Relation_APP_UserDetail = APP_UserDetailUuid

Import Your Excel Data

Do you keep a lot of your data in Excel sheets? Use time cockpit’s built-in Excel importer. Map your Excel worksheets to time cockpit tables, test your import and load your existing data into time cockpit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does time cockpit have a REST API?

Yes. The Web API is a REST interface with JSON whose OData endpoint lets you read and write every time tracking entity, including your own fields and tables.

How do I connect Power BI or Excel to my time tracking?

Power BI and Excel access the data in time cockpit directly through the OData endpoint, without any programming. The OData documentation describes how to set up the connection.

What is TCQL and what do I need the query endpoint for?

TCQL (time cockpit Query Language) is time cockpit’s query language. With the query endpoint you fetch exactly the data you need for analyses or for handing it over to other systems.

How do I authenticate against the time cockpit API?

With a personal access token that you send in the Authorization header of every request. Each request sees only the data the token’s user is allowed to see.

Does the Web API cost extra?

No, the Web API with personal access token authentication is included in all plans according to the pricing page. Creating and removing users automatically via API and direct read access to the database are reserved for the Business plan.

Can I create and remove users automatically via API?

Yes, in the Business plan you create, update and deactivate user accounts through the User Management API. This way, joiners and leavers are taken over automatically from the system that holds your employee data.

Can I import existing data from Excel?

Yes, with the Excel importer you map your worksheets to time cockpit tables, test the import and then load your existing data.
